Tim Knappstein competed in the Classic Adelaide
Rally, 2005 and won his class. The Classic Adelaide is a closed
special stage tarmac rally held in and around Adelaide for
historic and classic vehicles. I was there to follow the Minis
for The Mini Experience magazine and in between having a great
time driving to and from the stages I had the opportunity
to shoot some fantastic motorsport images. This is one of
my favourites with the grape vines in the background of the
Kersbrook Stage.
This picture of a lion was taken at Taronga
Zoo in Sydney in 2004. It was taken at feeding time and the
lion is looking up at the trainer who is throwing the food to
him. The photo was taken from approximately 2 metres through the
glass with a Sony F717. Unfortunately
I cannot capture for you the sounds that a lion makes when it
wants to be heard. At one point the male snapped at a tourist
who was tapping on the glass. I missed the shot but the memory
will live with me forever. The glass literally shook with the
amazing bass these animals can produce. I hope one day to go on
safari and see some big cats in the flesh.
This picture of a hippopotomas
was taken at Adelaide
Zoo in 2004. Adelaide is my local zoo and I spend quite a
lot of time there. Each time a different animal decides to show
off for me. On this particular day it was the hippos. Adelaide
has two hippos in a fairly small enclosure. The
water is murky and the hippos will suddenly surface with their
ears wriggling. I was lucky on this occaison to capture this image,
filling the frame at close range with an entire hippo head. I
really like their stiff whiskers and furry ears, and the way their
leathery skin glistens in the light.
This image is of Henley Jetty
in Adelaide, taken in 2005. I grew up in Henley Beach and spent
a lot of summers on this very beach playing beach cricket and
swimming. I really like the warm colours of sunset on the South
Australian Coast during summer. The orange glow from the sun slowly
fades into the deep blue of the sky. I particularly enjoy using
silhouettes in my photography. I love the contrast of the criss
crossing straightness pilons of the jetty compared to the smooth
flowing shapes of the couple in the foreground.
This capture of a ballerina was taken at my younger
sister's ballet concert in 2004. I was there to support my sister
and get some nice shots for my mum and the young lady pictured stole
the show. A top class performance and I thank her for providing
me with an opportunity to freeze her elegance in frame. The image
has been converted to black and white during post processing.
This image of Sydney Harbour Bridge was captured during
Easter of 2004 when I was in Sydney to see the stage production
of the Lion King. There are probably millions of shots of the bridge
so I tried to create something a little different here and shot
the bridge at jaunty angle just on dusk. You can see the glow from
Lunar Park underneath the bridge. The purple sky at dusk is quite
a site to behold. Sydney is a beautiful city at night, I hope one
day to manage to spend New Years Eve there and witness the amazing
fireworks display.
This simple image captured my imagination during a
recent trip to the Adelaide Bicentennial Conservatory. The way a
beam of sunlight has lit this one leaf is quite beautiful. The conservatory
is a wonderful place to look for little pieces of nature to capture.
I have quite a collection of photos from within its glass dome.
It is only 100 metres long but manages to take up large chunks of
my time every time I visit it, and at $3.60 to get in, it's a bargain!
